A sweet jRPG-style game about cats, brutal massacres, cuteness, racism and social issues, friendship, sinister thoughts, hilarity and Nazi furniture. It’s an epic attempt to blow your mind with adult themes hidden behind bright cartoon graphics.
Small issues aside, I can safely and enthusiastically recommend Chronicles of Nyanya. For an indie title, it is very clear that this game is no half-assed RPG. It has all of the right elements and every feature that any seasoned player will expect and a lot more to boot. Triple-A developers should take note: This one has it all.
The Chronicles of Nyanya looks like a bad dream, but is actually one of the most refreshing and fun RPGs that I have played in a long, long time. There is so much to love about the story and the dialogue, and the humor of the game is witty, smart, and charming. Battles are basic as is the gameplay throughout, but there are certain tweaks to that which provide more challenge and cerebrality. There are some small issues, and one big game crashing issue that drags the quality down, but overall this is a surprise triumph and well worth your attention.
The Chronicles of Nyanya is like a shotgun loaded with popcultural references. The game clearly leans towards comedy, but its gameplay mechanics, though very basic, are well-thought-out. [06/2018, p.67]
Overall, I enjoyed the game quite a bit. I think that there was a great amount of effort put into creating this jRPG and I really appreciated the intricate artwork throughout.
