Aurion is an epic action RPG set in a wonderful African Fantasy world with a unique, open and dynamic fighting gameplay. Enzo Kori-Odan, the prince of Zama is a victim of a coup d'etat orchestrated by his brother in-law on the day of his coronation and wedding with Erine Evou. The royal couple is then exiled and decides to go around the world in search of allies.
They will especially have to reunite Enzo’s warring legacy in order to retrieve their throne. Beyond retrieving their position, the dethroned Royal couple will precisely discover the geopolitical and existential dilemmas attached to their functions of King and Queen. They will have to find answers in.
Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan is a rough-gem: although a little unpolished, it leaves a rare sense of a unique game, while it reflects to the player all the passion of its creators for it.
Nimble gameplay, luscious aesthetic values, wise storytelling and truly understanding the principles of its genre make Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan a breath of fresh air amidst Western games with often are marred by needless drudgery. Quite an achievement for a 2D side-scrolling action-RPG with a very modest price tag coming from an untapped territory in the world of gaming.
So while I look forward to other world cultures using games as a means of passing down legacies and stories, let Aurion double as a cautionary tale in addition to a decent action RPG.
KIRO'O Games has made a truly convincing first game. Not a perfect one, as fights can quickly become a little too repetitive. But a truly charming one, with some efficient writing, lovely characters and magnificent art style.
Bugs and hiccups aside, Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan is staggering for an inaugural effort, especially when you consider that it's the first ever game from Central Africa. It needs some polish, but the core base is there, and the team really knows how to tell a story.
A little too ambitious for its own good, Aurio still shows serious promise for Cameroonian game development. [Issue#251, p.62]
Filled with ambition and a unique perspective, Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan could have been an excellent game, telling uniquely African stories. It is brought down by poor pacing, repetitive and tedious battles and an unfortunate lack of polish.
