Lovecraft’s Untold Stories is an action RPG with rogue-like elements. Explore, improve your skills and gear, and fight cultists and creatures from the Mythos to stop the Old Ones’ plans in randomly generated levels based on Lovecraft stories.
At first I thought this just another twinstick shooter. But this is much more than meets the eye. The world of H.P. Lovecraft was put in a pleasing pixel design while mechanically it manages to challenge you from top to bottom.
This Lovecraftian roguelike does something very clever - it’s not punishingly difficult. Instead, it relies on a strong mystery plot. Unforgettable experience is guaranteed.
Overall I appreciate Lovecraft’s Untold Stories for being a procedurally generated roguelike that stands out from others in its genre with a unique atmosphere and spooky tone. Being more concerned with resource management and exploration than twitch bullet-hell gameplay was a smart move, even if that falls apart a bit when the combat does come around. While it has its flaws, this is a game I won’t have a hard time recommending to those interested in the genre- a perfect little game to fire up know and again late at night with the lights turned off.
Lovecraft’s Untold Stories is a competent, yet a bit repetitive, twin stick shooter with a good atmosphere, some depth and a very interesting pixel art take on the genre. Fans of the genre and the theme should take an interest here.
An interesting choice in creating a game based in Lovecraft's works, combining a highly addictive gameplay style with a horror packed atmospheric setting and a decent story.
Lovecraft’s Untold Stories lulls you into a false sense of security with its mostly banal horror, and then boom! Penguins screaming like people. I can still hear them. [Premature Evaluation]
